The ultimate watersports gift guide The ultimate watersports gift guide

The ultimate watersports gift guide

With the holiday season well and truly upon us, it’s time to find the perfect gifts for the people you care about. From our versatile wetsuits and cosy accessories we have lots of great options to help you choose. Check out our top selections below: For the one who is always cold: There’s always one who never gets their layering right, so maybe as a start educate them on the layering system so they know what to do.  Aquafleece® can pretty much guarantee some extra warmth on/off the water, in particular the Pro Aquafleece Spray Top can make the difference for those who get cooler on the water. Combine this with hot hands and hot socks to keep the extremities toasty with reflective titanium technology. Perfect for wetter days to keep your head snug is the waterproof, with bonded inner fleece lined Pro Aquafleece beanie. The one who can’t decide which sport they prefer: One of our most versatile products is the hydrophobic moisture wicking Polypro top that can be used across multiple sports as a warming base layer. A great addition to your kit bag for sailing, surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, kitesurfing and more. For taking out your extra layers, snacks, phone and more we recommend our 10L roll top dry bag, a classic but handy product for taking out on your boat/ board/ vessel. For your biggest fan / supporter: Have a loved one who prefers to support you from the shore / sidelines? Make sure they stay warm with an oversized warm jacket. For someone who prefers a larger more snuggly coat, you can pre order our Aquafleece® Robe here. Alternatively for someone who is a bit more active and would prefer a shorter fit with less bulk the Pro Aquafleece® Rigging Coat is the one. A great all round bag from our latest collaboration with local chandlery Sandy Point, made from repurposed sails down at Hayling Island Sailing Club, this bag works well for fitting all your essentials in. Someone who is always on the go: New this year, our 35L waterproof backpack is perfect for taking on the water, but also off the water: travelling, commuting, exploring and every day use. With multiple pockets inside and out, waterproof construction and even a reflective strip this bag is sure to set you up for any adventure. The Classic sunglasses are polarised and great for everyday use to keep the glare out of your face when you’re on the move. The fair weather watersporter: We all know and love someone who only ever goes out on the water when the weather is perfect - “if its not sunny and twelve knots, I’m not going”. For these friends that only venture out in the summer months, stay protected from the summer rays with a UVF 50+ tech top ideal for on and off the water. Keep the UV rays also off your face with a trusty cap with a meshy back panel to increase ventilation. Dinghy Sailing enthusiast: If they’re more of the boat bimbling type you can’t go wrong with the Splicing tool kit bag or Sandy point pencil case / splicing bag. Classic by nature, classic by style and classic by name: The ¾ Classic Hikers 4/3mm are a timeless addition to any kitbag. They can be worn all year round - on their own in  the summer or with our UV protective rash leggings underneath or add an extra warm layer underneath, like our hot legs, and wear them as the weather gets colder. If you are still bamboozled with what to get your loved ones, why not chat to our awesome customer service team who are happy to help either on the phone, email or live chat :)

Designed by Women for Women; The launch of Rooster's female range

2018 saw the launch of our Women’s specific range, through a complete neoprene selection to complement our Unisex offering. At this time, we knew there was an issue for well fitting, comfortable gear specifically designed for women, but I don’t think we fully predicted the scope of the issue. The main aim through the range was to encourage female participation on the water, and to empower confidence and accessibility to the freedom of what watersports bring, with a particular focus on sailing. Through the development stage, we worked closely with a local group of women, the majority from Felpham’s brilliant Women on Water initiative. It was through this, that the scope of the issue really came to light. This project then became not just about designing another range of neoprene, but it was more about the opportunity to design something that could really help women to get out with confidence in what they are wearing and feel good in it, whilst also having all the technical details to be able to perform to the highest level for dinghy sailing. Some really fundamental and interesting issues arose through our focus group meetings: The focus group highlighted that if they felt good, then they were more inclined to participate more often. Kit that removes this barrier must be a real positive for the future of our sport. Some of them had little knowledge of what they should be wearing and more importantly why. Poorly fitting kit works against the female form, hindering performance and ultimate enjoyment. We spoke to so many women in the sport that took the attitude like 'I just wear my son's old stuff – it doesn't really matter'. It was like they had somehow lost sight of their own value, which we thought is important to address. One of the main challenges through the design process was to result in a product that would suit the majority of women – at the end of the day what is a ‘normal’ female shape?! We all know there is no ‘one size fits all’ for women, so we really tried to tackle this. The fitting stages in the development were very much, ‘let’s try to get as many different women, age and size as we can get to try the fitting samples on and make sure the samples can fit to everyone’. This approach, although timely did work well to get a great idea of what would work best. Some great hacks we developed off the back of our research and fitting sessions were: A racerback fit meant that it could fit to different chest and shoulder sizes quite universally. Long front zipper entry meant it easy to get into for a range of hip sizes. Using super soft and stretchy materials used throughout the range meant that the styles could stretch well over different shapes. Flattering panel layout and colours to reflect them. The focus had equal emphasis on performance, just as much as it did comfort, as Rooster specialises on technical gear, and this range was no exception. The Rooster women’s collection continues to develop and evolve, and through great feedback we have been able to keep it growing to tackle more issues. Another key development was the launch of the women’s crop top and sports shorts in 2020. These were developed working with Junior class associations in order to provide young girls transitioning into women to have a solution for underwear for under a wetsuit that would be supportive, non-sexualised and reflected on the advice that is given out for measures to take when on their period. Since the launch of these ranges, we have seen the demand for women’s gear increase exponentially, where it has been humbling to see women come forward and thank us for providing them with a comfortable range that they could wear with confidence. We now have alternatives to many of the unisex collection items, with an aim to close this gap even further moving into the future.

Top 10 winging tips Theo Galyer Winging tips

Top 10 winging tips Theo Galyer

1.Make sure you start on bigger kit as this will make the start of the winging journey much less painful. For example, when deciding on a board to start your journey as a Beginner the sensible formula is Weight + 40L. So, if you are 80kg I would suggest getting at least a 120L board. As this will provide stability which is your friend. The second-hand market is massive, especially on Facebook groups as people are often downsizing kit as they progress 2.Always wear a helmet no matter your ability. The are some sharp and solid elements to the kit that are worth avoiding if possible. Make sure you are attached to both the board and wing, choose the combination that works for you. I like a waist leash. Booties and knee pads are also an essential at the beginning. Trust me I learnt the hard way and ended up with bleeding tops of toes and very sore knees. Over time you may be able to drop the boots and pads as you spend more time flying!  3.Watch out for other riders and obstacles. When you are a beginner I would hope people should give you space. Over time, you will go upwind and downwind covering big distance. Sometimes you have a loss of visibility so check to see if there is anyone downwind when you start riding the waves.  4.Stance is vital, most will have the urge to bend legs and arch back ideally stand tall, straight arms.  5.When starting out a solid breeze is your friend. I found as a 100kg rider a 20 knot consistent wind was the magic number to finally start getting first flights. It also meant going from kneeling to standing up I had something to pull myself up on. However 15 knots and above is ok especially for practicing taxiing but don’t expect miracles in this. On top of this you want to find a flat sea state if possible.  6.When you are starting to ‘Pump’ on to the foil you should point further downwind then you might initially think.  Here is short but sweet tutorial; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMuuOGBoASo. YouTube is your friend on this journey and there is so much out there to help progress. 7.I started using a harness to extend my sessions. It is a great hack/mod that can help give you longer sessions. When you have some ground to cover upwind it’s a life saver. It is worth considering as you start to progress. 8.Location is key, find a local spot where there are other riders. The community is super friendly and not only provide valuable tips. They could potentially spot you getting in trouble. If I am going out on my own or somewhere I might not be seen I carry a phone inside my wetsuit. Avoid offshore wind and strong currents. Dead onshore breeze can also be difficult as it is hard to get off a beach. 9.Don’t loose motivation. I assure you if you put the time in to winging it will give you a lot of joy in return. However, don’t be surprised if you spend at least 5 sessions flapping around and getting frustrated. Just remember to tell yourself that no session is a wasted one. I guarantee each time you will learn something.  10.Know your limits. It is a serious work out especially in the early days. Although it can be very tempting to keep going and going. It is vital you take breaks and know when to call it a day. I think the phrase is ‘live to fight another day’. Plus, there is only so much you can do in one session. Make sure you are having fun!

AQUAFLEECE®: FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH

As the leaves turn to orange and the autumn night start to draw an early close, our number one question at Rooster’s Customer Service is which Aquafleece do I go for?  There is no simple definitive answer to this question, but the following guidance should help you choose what’s best for you.    For the Occasional Watersports Partaker:  Someone who maybe only sails a few times or doesn’t want to spend too much on a super technical bit of gear, the Classic Aquafleece Top is your friend. It’s still made with the same great all-round Aquafleece material and with a simple panel layout and overlock stitching construction, should provide enough protection from the elements on cooler days. If you’re buying for a child that’s in a growth spurt and eating, you out of house and home – we’d recommend this version too as it’s designed slightly longer in the body than the Pro Lite or Pro.   “I sail all year” except if I have the break the ice off the cover first…  Pro Lite Aquafleece Top is for you. This uses the same material and stitching as the Classic but has adjustment at the cuffs and wait band to help keep water out and the warm in. It is by far, our most popular model and comes in a range of colours as well as a ladies fit. If you’re not sure what to go for, it’s probably this one(!)    “I’m a self-confessed nutter. I’m on the water all year round – the colder the better!”  Pro Aquafleece Top is for you, particularly in the winter. (Although you may want to switch it out for a lightweight top for summer). Pro Aquafleece fabric is the thickest in this range and has taped seems so that no cold water will get through where the panels are stitched together. If you’re a cold bod, this single top with take you through autumn to spring and is likely to transform your winter sailing.   For the All-Weather Outdoor Protection in a Jacket  Ideal for rigging up in the rain, hiking through the mountains in a storm or just popping up to the shop in torrential rain, the Pro Aquafleece Rigging Jacket is for you. The initial design idea was to build a jacket capable of going on top of all your gear to protect you from those days when it’s probably warmer to rig up already in your wetsuit. It is over sized, comes down to the just above the knee and has double sleeve cuffs as well as a mid-height collar and waterproof zip to really keep all the drips out. Just like the Pro Aquafleece top, this coat is made with the same thicker fleece and taped seams but its less sailing specific design opens it up to a variety of sport and activities.  The Ultimate Cool Crossover  The Aquafleece Hoodie could be considered our most exciting Aquafleece yet. The normal hoodie style you would expect, crossed with the Classic or Pro Lite Aquafleece materials gives any watersports lover the option to use one garment for Paddle Boarding up the river or sitting on the rail of a yacht and then heading straight to the pub or nipping into the supermarket for some lunch and not looking out of place. It’s been a great hit with dog walkers, requiring a more wind protection than a normal jumper and also sailing instructors spending all day on and off the water.    For the Multi-Sport Athlete  The Active Aquafleece is your friend, designed with a slimmer, yet more flexible fit, with additional panels added at the back of the shoulders for unlimited movement. The large front zip down to the chest allows for great ventilation, where this top can be used for nearly any sport. It is not completely waterproof (although the fabric itself is waterproof) as the seams are not taped, but this does allow for extra breathability. It uses the same seam construction as the Classic, Pro Lite and Hoodie Aquafleece styles. The Rooster team have tested it for running, cycling and sailing (of course) and it’s been a real hit!    For the Instant Warm Hug: Aquafleece Robe Our newest iteration of the Aquafleece is so new, it’s not yet on the shelf. The Aquafleece 2 in 1 Robe is an all cocooning hooded gown to wrap you up and keep you protected from the outside elements. Ideal for post swim or watching from the side-lines, this has got to be the thickest, warmest and cosiest application of Aquafleece yet. Key to this style is it’s removable teddy lining, that can be washed easily making it even easier to care for, whilst also doubling up the purpose of the Robe as a lighter jacket.   If you’re still unsure what to go for after reading this, give Rooster a call on +44(0)1243389997 or drop us an email at sales@roostersailing.com so we can find what’s best for you and your activities.

Game-Changing kit for Active People On and Off the Water

Getting a closer look at why the kit at Rooster is made a particular way is really important to us. it's often unconventional, we don't only take one hobby or skill into account, we're catering for the active people who want to do and try everything and have the exact right kit for the job every time. QUICK-DRY UVF50+ TECH T-SHIRT LS I think of this long-sleeved tech top as such an unsung hero in the kit range. Everyone I know that wears one has it as their go-to staple top now, men, women and kids alike. Possibly 'unsung' because on the surface it is a normal long sleeved top but, my word, is it comfortable! Not only that but it's protecting you from the sun at a UV protection rating of 50+ as well as being quick drying which make is ideal in the hot or cold climate, providing an excellent extra base layer when it gets cold. Lightweight and loose-fitting, use as a base layer, training shirt, or as a laid back alternative to a rash vest - the ideal multi-purpose tech top. This is a special one, we’ve utilised FERAN ICE® by Rudolf GmbH hydrophilic material technology to provide the best moisture transport, improved soil release properties to keep garment soft and supple wash after wash. The reviews on this one really speak for themselves! Women's Sports Shorts and Sports Bra A fairly recent addition but an important step into hybrid kit for women, by this I mean kit that can be multifunctional across all the sports from land to sea. We've made them both out of heavy duty nylon spandex for comfort, stretch, flattering fit and, most importantly, to get wet. great for running, yoga, benching at the gym or pilates, but in the same breath, the low profile style and cut keeps them seamless for wearing underneath a wetsuit. Or just jump straight in the water on a hot day and they'll behave like any other swimsuit. Double layered throughout for added support, the Sports Bra has a racer back made from mesh, where the sports shorts have a mesh gusset enhancing breathability,  Wide yet soft elastic high waist band on shorts and chest band on sports bra keeps the top securely in place.     Race Armour Knee Pads   Very new but so worth their weight in innovative design! If you're on a boat and you spend time on your knees you should be seriously considering knee pads, they're also quite good for those of spend a lot of time supping on their knees. They're actually a sleeve so they do have more staying power and comfort than a lot of knee pads, but they also have added shin protection, because it's not always just your knees that hit the deck. A streamlined fit with a silicon rubber elastic webbing strip at the top band and above the calf maintains the position of the knee pads, whilst an additional elastic strap is positioned just below the knee to further secure the pad in place. Comfortable stretch panels around the main knee panel allow stretch where you need it the most and improved movement, with a breathable mesh panel down the back to add breathability to the back of your leg. We've used Duratex II at the outer surface and NBR rubber used on the inside – this has minimal water absorption so weight will not be added to the pads when wet, the properties of the rubber also mean that the pad will mould to your body slightly and also adds some shock absorption for any falls, and we all know they do happen. Ponchos In an age of keeping safe, we're changing outdoors more and more but we didn't just want to create a simple changing robe, we sought to make sure that it was quick drying and very lightweight, packing down to fit in the smallest possible space in a kit bag, easy to kart around, easy to maintain and easy to dry. They are strictly speaking 'one-size' but we have an adult poncho, a junior poncho and a baby-junior poncho - we're all a little sad that we don't fit into the baby junior poncho in the office because it has THE MOST ADORABLE Comb on the hood but for those of us that aren't toddlers, it's a pretty tight squeeze. Technical Shorts and Race Armour Deck Pads for Technical Shorts   These Tech shorts are more durable on the seat panel than I have seen before in sailing, using reinforced Cordura®,  but it's not just about that... They look like a simple low-profile fit but they're also exceptionally multifunctional: Pockets, zips, loops, velcro and adjustable side tabs make up an incredibly useful pair of shorts. Not to mention the nice slight stretch in the main panels that are also quick-drying and UV protective. The most important feature, I think, when it comes to these shorts though is the optional extra padding: Padding your clothing isn't just for dinghy hikers and rugby shoulders. Technical Shorts are cooling, abrasion resistant shorts with well designed pockets and systems that are hugely functional and comfortable for the competitive keelboat sailor, our Deck Pad inserts take them another step further. We have designed Technical shorts to be able to fit these in seamlessly. Made of M.I.S.R.A foam (Mouldable Impact Shock Resistant Armour) that is very firm for shock absorption as well as memory active to perfectly mould to your unique shape for comfort and ease of movement. Keelboat hiking just became painless.     Laptop Backpack   Last, but (and I cannot stress this enough) NOT LEAST,  something we have called the 'Laptop Backpack' which you absolutely must consider to be only one isolated example of its possible use. I have been using this as my laptop backpack for around 2-ish years, I certainly don't HAVE to be using it everyday as such and i wouldn't if i came across something more useful to me but I simply haven't. The level of well thought through extra pockets, adjustable gaps, zips and clips its next level. I like to drink a huge amount of water from a huge water bottle and there is no way that I will ever put that bottle in the bag of expensive electronics with a lifetime of work on - I've had some traumatic experiences in the past with tea. So, the side bottle holder (I agree not unique yet, but ideal) stretches to fit a large bottle but the extra clip above (suddenly getting more unique) holds your larger, taller bottles firmly in place, and that's adjustable, so, just bear with me here, my water is on the outside of this waterproof bag, held in tightly, SO... Last weekend I went running and trekking up and down hills for hours and in my head I had no bag that I deemed appropriate for this, then I saw my 'Laptop Backpack', adjustable straps, CHEST STRAP, water tightly secured on the outside, pockets for everything, sunglasses, snacks, keys, camera, layers, laptop - ok I made utterly no use of the laptop compartment for this particular trip, and what a joy, I didn't get a sweaty back either. So yes, take it to work, but also take it cycling, walking, hiking and travelling.

What's the Difference? - The Aquafleece Robe® vs The Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket

From a first glance, you may not notice too much difference between our Aquafleece® Robe and the Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket. And that’s totally understandable, after all they’re made from the same iconic Aquafleece® material, are available in the same colourways and just look like two long coats. But we’ve been listening to our customers as we’ve been meeting them at shows in the UK this year, and we feel as though they deserve a comparison spotlight so you can make the right choice. Similar they may seem, but let’s take a closer look at what makes these two coats completely different, and find out which one is the best match for you and your lifestyle. We’ll compare the fit, the price and the technical features and function of the two to help you decide. Size Getting the right size for your equipment and gear is essential for experiencing the ultimate enjoyment from your day. Learning the difference between the sizing options of our Aquafleece® Robe and Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket could be the difference between why you purchase one from the other. Robe: One size fits all (Junior available). This gives everyone room to have the option to use the robe as a changing tool. Wear the robe over your wetsuit, zip yourself in and remove your arms to comfortably get changed wherever you need. Adjust the cuffs to suit your arm length when worn as normal. Rigging Jacket: Comes in sizes; Junior, XS/S, M/L, XL/XXL and XXXL/XXXXL and is designed to be ever so slightly oversized, so you can fit your buoyancy aid under when transitioning from rigging to sailing. If you’re looking for more of a day-to-day style, this one might be a better option for you. The Rigging Jacket should come to your mid-thigh and the adjustable cuffs allow you to tailor the wrists to your arm length. Length & Shape We’ve thought very carefully into the shapes of our Aquafleece® Robe and our Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket. Their unique functions and uses mean the lengths are slightly different and here’s why. Robe: The ‘one-size for all’ fit means the robe is much longer in the body than the Rigging Jacket. The robe will come to your mid-calf, or your ankle at the very most. The length is designed to allow you to feel comfortable getting changed, and for keeping the elements off from your whole body after you have been fully submerged in the water. The Aquafleece® outer shell will keep the wind off you whilst getting changed too. Rigging Jacket: The coat should come to your mid-thigh at the front, and it has been designed with a lower tiered back to protect you and your clothing from wet surfaces when you sit down or lean. The longer back also allows for rain and spray to run away from your core, keeping you warm and dry for the rest of the day. Lining It’s the inside that counts the most, and that is certainly true if you’re comparing these two garments. It’s the lining of these coats that truly set them apart in design and purpose, and ultimately complete preference to the customer. Robe: The robe includes a fleece terry lining, which is fully removable. The lining is extremely warm and cosy in very cold weather and exposed elements, but acts double as a soft towelling material to dry you as you change. The lining can be removed completely, including the arms and hood, to allow you to wash the inside of your jacket, so you can freshen up your robe for your next adventure. This is the first changing robe on the market to have this ability. Rigging Jacket: Like our other Aquafleece® range, the Rigging Jacket has a soft and smooth ‘short’ fleece lining throughout, including the pockets. This makes the jacket more lightweight, but with the Aquafleece® windproof shell, this is still a great option for you if you’re prone to feeling the cold, but manoeuvrability is required.  Hoods Not the most obvious comparison to make on coats, especially when made by the same manufacturer, but the hood could be the reason you pick one coat over the other if you’re looking at costs and technicality. Robe: The robe has a spacious hood. Just like the rest of the robe lining, the inside of the hood has a terry lining to aid drying your head and hair. The hood has a soft Aquafleece® shell which keeps the wind off your head. Rigging Jacket: The hood of the rigging jacket is much more structured than the robe, and includes a peaked cap to protect your face from elements such as rain and spray or as a block shield from the sun.* The Rigging Jacket also has a reflective patch on the top of the hood, which is visible when you wear it down, a great safety feature for off-shore sailing and walking in low visibility.  Cost Comparing the cost between the two is an important part of piecing together the aesthetically set apart differences. The features listed indicate that the Rigging Jacket is in fact a more technical product and this is reflected fairly in the price point. Robe: £165 A competitive price for a high tech changing robe, the first on the market with the ability to remove the lining for the purpose of keeping your robe hygienic. The Aquafleece® material has a Polyurethane coating on the outside for water resistance, durability and flexibility. The Aquafleece® Robe being our largest Aquafleece® product, you would assume that it would be the most expensive in the range.  Rigging Jacket: £172.50 The Rigging Jacket price attracts plenty of questions when we compare the two coats. If the Rigging Jacket is smaller in size and length, then why does it cost more over the heavier and larger Robe? The Rigging Jacket may have lighter properties at first glance, but when we take a closer look at the structured hood, this explains the slight price increase as the hood is much more technical than the Aquafleece® Robe’s.  Use Depending on what it is you’re most likely to be doing, taking a closer look at how these coats were designed to serve the customer, the ergonomics that have gone into the process are fit for purpose. But depending on what that purpose is will be the decider.  Robe: Primarily designed for the on-the-go, quick changing, watersports mad individual, the concept of the changing robe has stretched beyond the boat park in the UK. Customers are tending to use them for day-to-day errands such as commuting, walking the dog and even going to the shops. It’s hardly a surprise whilst our winters seem to get colder every year. The robe was created to give the option to change in the most convenient way, and giving the ability to wash this after use, but you can use it how you wish! Rigging Jacket: Rigging by name, rigging by nature. The rigging jacket was created to keep you warm and dry whilst you get ready for your day out on the water. It's also perfect for coaches out on the rib all day long. But like the robe it has transferring powers taking you from the boat park and beyond into everyday activities due to its lightweight feel but weather battling qualities.   photo credit: AASailing We hope that looking into more detail, we've have helped you understand the differences between the two, and have given you food for thought when choosing which one is better suited to you. If you’re still struggling to decide, then please feel free to get in touch with our friendly customer service team if you’re still not sure. *Please don’t use the peak of the Rigging Jacket to protect your eyes from the sun alone, we advise you use proper UVA/UVB protection sunglasses
