Gear Up: Your Essential Kit Guide for Summer Sailing Champs

Summer sailing and regattas often mean long hours on the water — sometimes with three or more races back to back. If you’re new to it, or haven’t raced in a while, knowing what to wear or take with you can feel overwhelming. For the seasoned sailor, it’s often second nature — but even the most experienced can get caught out when they’re a bit rusty or just haven’t had to prep for a full championship day in a while. Even simple logistics can throw you off: can you drop a drybag on a rib? If so, great — you have more flexibility. But if you’re scrambling to find that rib between races or the next warning signal goes up right after the finish, you could be left without the gear you were counting on. Just like any endurance sport, sailing demands planning — for clothing, food, and hydration. The goal? Bring what you need without overpacking. Most dinghies don’t have room for your entire wardrobe and snack cupboard. Pack too much and it's dead weight; pack too little and, inevitably, that’s the day you needed that extra layer or snack bar. The Weather Never Makes it Easy British summer sailing is unpredictable. Sure, we all know the signs — clouds building inland, a sea breeze on the way — but forecasts rarely tell the full story. The “real feel” out on the water can be wildly different from what was expected. We've written a blog on this which is well worth a read. Read more. When you’re 2 hours from shore in a dinghy, you have to be self-reliant. Even at a big event surrounded by boats and safety cover, you need to look after number one. That means having the right gear, fuel, and backup layers — because when the unexpected happens, you want to be ready. Fuel Matters: Food & Hydration Outfit choices are only half the battle. Staying fuelled and hydrated is critical for performance and recovery — especially over back-to-back races.  Your Championship Kit Guide: What to Wear, What to Pack We’ve created a simple guide to help you layer up, pack smart, and stay comfortable during race days — whether it’s a short session or an all-day affair. Your Standard Base Kit Based on a mild Summer  | 20–28°C Top layer: Rash top or PolyPro top Rash = cooler, UV protection PolyPro = extra warmth + UV, fleece-lined Bottom half: Thermaflex 1.5mm Longjohn or Race Armour Lite Shorts Buoyancy Aid Aeromesh Cap – protects your head & aids ventilation UV Neck Sleeve – adds sun protection Boots – suitable for your boat and grip needs Sunglasses – ideally with a retainer   Long Day on the Water (3–5 hours | 3–4 races back-to-back | 20–28°C) UV lip balm / small suncream Cereal or oat based bar (slow-release energy) Gel, sweets or fruit (fast-release energy) On Board: 2x large water bottles 1 water, 1 electrolytes (use a Joey Bottle Holder) Drybag - 10L Rolltop Drybag - perfect for on the boat or 35L Dry Backpack - if you have access to a rib to store: Lightweight spray top or SB1 dry smock Spare warmer layer (PolyPro or Thermaflex top) Suncream Lunch/snacks   Shorter Day on the Water (1–2 hours | 1–2 races back-to-back | 20-28°C) Pockets: UV lip balm Mini suncream Snack bar On Board: 1–2 large drinks bottles (again, ideally one with electrolytes) Joey Bottle Holder   Drybag - 3L Rolltop Drybag: Lightweight spray top or Thermaflex top Extra snack Suncream Bonus Kit: Things You Might Be Glad You Brought! Spare rope/lines Whistle Knife Duck tape (“If you can’t fix it with duck tape…”) Electrical tape Spare shackles/blocks/split pins Sail repair tape Multi-tool Emergency blanket Phone or VHF radio   Long days on the water are where championships are won and lost, and your preparation can make a huge difference. Pack smart, dress for the conditions, and fuel your body properly. That way, you’ll be focused on racing, not worrying about what you left behind.

Why Upgrade to a 4mm Wetsuit for Winter Sailing?

Winter sailing can be some of the most rewarding time on the water — crisp mornings, steady breezes, quieter waters. But with colder conditions comes one big challenge: staying warm. Your wetsuit is your first line of defence, and choosing the right thickness is critical. Here’s why upgrading to a Supertherm 4mm wetsuit can transform your cold-weather sailing experience. Quick Look: 1. How Neoprene Keeps You Warm Neoprene works by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the suit. Your body heats this water, creating an insulating barrier. The thicker the neoprene, the more insulation it provides — making it much harder for heat to escape. 2. Why Thickness Matters 1.5mm neoprene (like our Thermaflex) offers flexibility and comfort for mild to warm conditions. 4mm neoprene (like the Supertherm) adds serious insulation for cold-weather training, helping you retain heat for longer sessions. Think of it like the difference between a light jacket and a winter coat — both have their place, but when the cold bites, you’ll want the thicker layer. 3. Advanced Linings for Extra Warmth The Supertherm 4mm range isn’t just thicker — it’s smarter. Enhanced linings wick moisture away from your skin, add thermal comfort, and dry faster between sessions. That means less of the “chill factor” when you put your wetsuit back on for the afternoon race. 4. The Role of Stitching: Flatlock vs GBS Not all seams are created equal. Flatlock stitching (used in thinner suits like Thermaflex) is breathable but allows small amounts of water through — fine for warmer sailing. GBS (Glued and Blind Stitched) seams, used in all our Supertherm range, are sealed to minimise water entry. This keeps the insulating layer of water more stable and your body much warmer. 5. Designed for Winter Performance Sailors often assume thicker neoprene means restricted movement — not with Supertherm. Our panels are engineered for stretch and flexibility where you need it most, so you stay agile and comfortable while still benefiting from maximum warmth. 6. Pairing with Other Layers The Supertherm range is built to be part of your complete winter system. Layer it up with: ·       Thermal base layers like our Polypro or Hot tops & leggings — not only do they help manage moisture, but they also add an extra insulating layer, trapping air and boosting warmth. ·       Spray protection such as the Aquafleece® or SB1 Inshore Dry Smock — your outer defence against wind and water. Together, these layers create a system that locks in heat, keeps you dry, and stands up to whatever winter sailing throws at you. Read more about layering by visiting our Layering Guide. Don’t let the cold hold you back. With the right wetsuit, winter sailing can be just as enjoyable — if not more — than the summer season. Our Supertherm 4mm range is designed to give you the warmth, comfort, and performance you need to sail on through the colder months.

What to Wear - Layering up for the Autumn

Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned professional, wearing the right kit for the conditions and being comfortable on the water can affect your enjoyment, safety and results. The buzz word in the technical marine clothing industry at the moment is “layering,” but what does that actually mean? The idea can be confusing, particularly in winter when too many layers of warm clothing can leave you looking like the Michelin man and unable to move. Thanks to advances in fabric technology and the way these are applied to the design and fit of sailing kit, you can find that you can get away with a “less is more” approach to your kit bag. Rooster®’s approach to manufacturing sailing kit starts primarily with the end-user in mind. Our products are specifically designed to give the wearer maximum comfort, safety and functionality whilst maintaining quality and durability - it won’t break the bank either. The Rooster® layering concept involves selecting a base layer, mid layer and top layer that is interchangeable and can be worn all year round – and this is where you get your value for money. Choose pieces that can be layered up or down depending on the temperature and conditions, this is particularly important for Brits who can experience four seasons in one day. The Rooster® base layer is called PolyPro™ and should be worn next to your skin underneath your wetsuit. Another buzz word in the industry is “hydrophobic” which basically means the material repels water. These base layers can be washed overnight and will be dry by morning, in fact they feel dry to the touch when you take them out of the washing machine. They’re also multi-purpose and can be used for skiing, winter cycling and running, basically any time you feel like you need to put thermals on. Our PolyPro™ base layers are available as a top, leggings, glove liners, socks, head band and balaclava.  Learn more about PolyPro;    The mid layer is your neoprene layer. We recommend choosing a longjohn and top as they can be worn as separates depending on the conditions. We offer these products in a range of thickness to suit the climate the sailor predominately sails in and whether they tend to feel the cold or not. The most popular with our year-round sailors is the SuperTherm® 4mm Longjohn.  For the occasional fair weather sailor or for those lucky to sail in warmer waters, the ThermaFlex® 1.5mm Longjohn would be more suitable. These can be paired up with a top of the same neoprene thickness, however many opt for a thinner layer combining a 4mm Longjohn with a 1.5mm top. More about Supertherm® VS Thermaflex®:   Finally, the top layer is probably the cherry on the Rooster® cake. Our development of the Aquafleece® material revolutionised the standard spray top. The fabric has a Polyurethane coating on the outside for water resistance, durability and flexibility combined with a fleece inner layer to keep you snug and warm - a combination that works well when wet or dry. It’s one of those products that people try once and never look back! Once you’ve added your accessories – Gloves, Boots, Buoyancy Aid, Hat – you’re ready to go and will be warm, comfortable and moving around the boat like a ninja! Best of all, you’ll have a wardrobe of interchangeable kit that will see you through all seasons. For advice on layering and which products might work best with your existing kit to give you a heat boost, just give us a call, we’re more than happy to help. Save Save

An Olympic Journey & Moving on from the Finn, Facu Olezza

After returning from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, placing 6th overall, Argentinian Rooster Ambassador Facundo Olezza (Facu) has been reflecting on his journey with the Finn class: Since the very end of Rio Olympics my team and I started working straight away to pursue the process of becoming my best possible version. It has always defined me to want better and more, and that has always been my fuel and my path. I have been through a really tough struggle on the way to Tokyo as my country (Argentina) went through a really tough time economically and socially. While during lockdown it was almost impossible to keep up the good training, the challenge was to keep up the good attitude and keep working on myself. Being able to use adversity to become stronger and still work on some aspects of myself as a sportman and as a person, gave me the determination and strength needed to fight at the olympics and come away with a good result, regardless of my expectations. The Rooster team and I have been on the same page from day 1, we both agree that results are not as important as the journey. As well, having a wide range of kit that suited me for the cold European winter regattas where my choice of preference are the Pro Hikers with Battens combined with the Thermaflex® Top. Where in the warmer weather in Tokyo I sailed in fresh lighter kit, with the UVF Quick-Dry Tech Top combined with my absolute favourite Pro Rash Legs with Pro Hike Pads. What I respect and enjoy the most about Rooster, is the values of the team behind the scenes and the pursuit of becoming better with a really strong passion with which I identify with myself! My new journey in the ILCA 7 has begun as the Finn is no longer going to be in the Olympics, and I look forward to and embrace the new challenge! Facu

Getting back into Dinghy racing Getting back into Dinghy racing

Getting back into Dinghy racing

Sailing, like any sport, has a busy summer season for racing, with numerous events taking place all over the UK and beyond. For me, sailing an RS200 in the North West leads me to the RS200 Northern Tour alongside the Rooster Championship Tour which will include the National Championships taking place at East Lothian Yacht Club. Chinese general and military strategist, Sun Tzu, once said: “Every battle is won before it is fought”. In other words, you need to manage resources and preparation effectively before you enter battle…or in dinghy terms, any racing event. Whether it is a club, regional, national or international event, it is useful for us to consider the appropriate preparation and ensure that mentally, physically and emotionally we are as strong as possible. Whilst I was at university and learnt team racing, I always found it useful to keep focused in the moments leading up to the race and then to maintain a present state of mind when racing. As a result of the covid-19 pandemic, racing events were fewer and far between over the last couple of years. Nevertheless, I managed to participate in a first major RS200 event in late 2021. Sailing in at Royal Torbay Yacht Club for Summer Championships in August 2021 demonstrated to me how quickly coastal areas can change in relation to wind and weather conditions and the appropriate attire also changed, so a dry bag with extra kit is essential! These are some of my favourite pieces of kit which I feel are very important in contributing to a positive day of dinghy racing. The supertherm range is great for cold Winter training and racing – Women's SuperTherm 4mm Wetsuit  I tend to bring out the Thermaflex for the summer months - Women's ThermaFlex 1.5mm Wetsuit  The Essentials range is great for majority of the year, if you wear layers underneath and on top - Essentials 2mm Full Wetsuit Plus I would highly recommend the Aquafleece for wetter and often coastal days, particularly when competing in a racing series and you are sat in between races - Women's Aquafleece Spray Tops | Rooster Sailing & Watersports     Since I had a major life event taking place in 2022, I decided not to commit to any major racing events but concentrated on my overall fitness and strength. Wakeboarding regularly ensured that my strength and stamina was maintained and you can read more about my wakeboarding experiences via the link: https://www.roostersailing.com/blogs/ambassadors/wagers-with-wakeboarding-where-to-start-what-to-wear-and-what-to-expect I also sailed regularly to train and worked on my sailing posture and adaptation to wind conditions, which I hope will be of great help in the upcoming racing season for 2023. I am regularly competing in club races at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club and look forward to the challenges that will be faced in the other sailing events.     Whilst considering a return back to dinghy racing, I created the below acrostic which reads “Whatever The Weather, Be There”. I hope this provides some useful inspiration and tips ahead of the dinghy racing season, and motivates you to enter the next dinghy racing event. Always remember Benjamin Franklin’s words: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”.     Whether the weather be fine, Or whether the weather be not, Whether the weather be cold, Or whether the weather be hot, We'll weather the weather Whatever the weather, Whether we like it or not! - be disciplined no matter what and make the start line…   Have goals - build up your schedule to reflect what performance you hope to achieve…   Aim high - it never hurts to be optimistic as one day you may win that race…   Train consistently - if that means only once or twice a week in the gym, stick to a regular pattern…   Exercise in a way that suits your body - if you prefer mornings, start early or if you are a night owl, finish the day in a positive way…   Vary your training - water drills, land sessions, strength and conditioning, yoga or Pilates: all help to strengthen the body in different ways    Eat a balanced diet - your body needs fuel to keep going and sailing is a strenuous sport   Read your rules - make sure you’re up to date with all the racing rules that apply to your class of boat    Tune your boat - make sure that every part of your boat is in tip top shape    Height and weight are important - know the measurements of helm (and /) or crew to ensure boat is tuned well     Expected weather conditions should be in your mind at all times - watch the weather forecast with great interest and ensure that you have the appropriate clothing to match (I would recommend using supertherm for the very cold weather, thermaflex for moderate weather and essentials for medium – warm weather and remember that coastal sailing involves wind and tide and therefore, will probably result in wetter conditions overall)   Work smarter, not harder - ensure that you know the race course    Examine your sails regularly - check for any damages and ensure you have emergency tape on you at all times is important    Arrange lines in advance - tangled spinnaker sheets are less than ideal!    Tune rig for expected conditions - you can adapt them as you go    Have an open mind - weather conditions, travel, boat breakages, a faster competition…all these factors can throw you off pre/during/post racing so try to keep open to changes as they inevitably come along…   Embrace the challenge - try racing at coastal and inland environments to observe the different wind and tidal conditions    Remember your own limits - always wear safety equipment, including a buoyancy aid and safety nice, and don’t go out on the water if you’re unsure about the conditions…   Be disciplined on implementing a watch system - ensure you have a high quality timer for the start   Eliminate your competitors by first identifying them - during the pre-race sailing and during the race, make sure you watch your speed in relation to others sailing around you   Take the time to evaluate yourself and your habits at the start of a new year - is there anything more that you could do to help yourself feel better prepared (ie. more light wind boat handling, roll tacks, boat bimbling)    Hydrate - make sure you have spare bottles of water / homemade energy drinks (ie. squash accompanied by the appropriate amount of sugar - speak to your coach if you’re unsure)   Energise - whatever helps you feel most ready for training ie. starting the day with a brisk walk, a jog or some yoga to get yourself into the best mindset    Re-hydrate - remember that you need to continue taking in fluids after your training / practice racing    Even when you have doubts about your performance, just give it a go!      “Proper preparation and planning prevents poor performance”   Enjoy your sailing!   Sitara 😊

Pain Free Hiking

The most important aspect of a good pair of hiking shorts is positioning of the battens and the lift they provide. The options we do for hiking are: Pro Hikers  Classic hikers ¾ Pro Hikers No Pads Race Armour Lite Shorts Thermaflex Longjohns & Legs Supertherm Longjohns Pro Rash Legs Now that list might be overwhelming so here is a quick summary of the different options. A lot of the time the choice of which hiking system to go for is down to personal preference but hopefully this guide will give a bit of insight into our hikers. Pro Hikers  Full length with fixed battens, the pads tend to fit longer legged and pro sailors better. With longer legged sailors and super fit sailors, they are able to extend their legs further from the toestrap in a more comfortable manner, so they manage to get the hike pad over the side deck. My lack of ILCA training would have meant that I would have only managed to place the pro hike pad on the side deck. At 4/3mm and full length Pro hikers are ideal for cooler temperatures and winter sailing paired with hot or polypro legs. Then great by themselves all summer! Classic hikers ¾  ¾ length so just below the knee with knee reinforcements. These are also fixed pads that are slightly higher up the leg which tends to fit the less fit senior sailors and fitter younger sailors as well. A particular favourite for Topper sailors and younger sailors. Pro Hikers No Pads  Full length 4/3mm neoprene with the same construction as the standard Pro Hikers, just without the fixed pads. Compatible with our ProHike Pads so you can choose the size of pad you would like and also the position of where works best for you. I recently used them at the UK ILCA Masters Qualifier which was a brutal weekend of gusts in the area of 37 knots, although the RO thought it never reached over 27 on his committee boat (whilst holding his wind indicator under his jacket perhaps?)   Fitting the pads is easy, just turn the pro hikers inside out and place the hike pads about 3 inches from the knee seam.  The top of the hike pads are shaped to protect your delicate parts. The top of the hikers ended up being well into my bum cheeks.   I was not embarrassed as I can still remember seeing Paige Railey (World #1 Radial Sailor),waddling like a Penguin whilst walking on the shore.  Our Prohike pads are pre shaped to your leg, which gives you additional lift off the side deck.  This gives the sailor the ability to sail the boat much flatter without hitting the water, which is fast!   For me it also makes for a slightly nicer hiking position - gives my legs a slight bend, which having not sailed the ILCA much this year was a godsend. Having fitted the pads to where felt best, the pads were central to the deck edge, and I was in the lap of luxury.   Race Armour Lite Shorts  Our most versatile option, these neoprene and spandex shorts have the capability to add Prohike pads into the seat through our standard hook and loop attachment. These shorts can then be worn by themselves for summer sailing or over the top of any other wetsuit or drysuit. At the ILCA Qualifier my wife Sarah wore the shorts over her Supertherm Longjohn which she thought was a game changer. They never dropped or moved. Happy wife is a happy life! LongJohns and Legs  Similar to the shorts, our longjohns and legs are compatible with the Prohike pads. Meaning you can use your longjohns and legs for hiking but also for a large variety of watersports such as Stand Up Paddleboarding, Surfing or Kayak Hopefully this guide has been helpful in explaining our different hiking options. How to Keep Warm in the Winter with these Top 5 Tips!

Here are some ingenious tips and tricks to make your kit bag work harder for you this winter without breaking the bank. TIP #1: Cold Hands and Feet Your trusty sailing gloves and boots haven't let you down all summer but the rapidly dropping water and air temperatures are leaving your extremities cold and numb.  I can manage down to 8 degrees by adding some glove liners  such as Hot Hands or PolyPro™ Glove Liner. We also have a number of options on sock liners you can wear with your wetsuit boots to keep you toasty. If your boots are already on the right side, then take a look at Hot Socks, Thermaflex Wetsocks and PolyPro™ Sock Liner or if you have some space in your boots  then try the Supertherm Wetsocks are sooooo warm.  The fabrics and thicknesses vary depending on each individuals needs and the great thing is they can be used for a range of other sports too, like SUP'ing, cycling, skiing and Although our biggest selling glove by far is the Aquapro Glove, If you need some super warm hands - then the NEW Combi Glove will hit the spot with a space for a hot sachet where the tuck away mitten lives.  I've enjoyed super warm hands whatever the weather.  Check out the Fell Running Guide's review on our socks, and he also uses our glove liners when racing :) If the options seem confusing, give us a call and we'll guide you through the range.  Photo Credit: www.fellreunningguide.co.uk   TIP #2: Cold Ears/ Ice Cream Headache! Winter showers, hail, snow or an unexpected dunking, the most important part of your body to keep warm and dry is your head. It's amazing the difference putting a hat on can make to your day on the water. Even in Summer it's worth carrying a hat in case you find yourself hanging around in between races. Our Pro Aquafleece® Beanie gives you the comfort of a fleece lining, while the waterproof outer and taped seams work to keep the water out. It was one of my favourites:   Cold ears? Try our Headbands - I have even used them Cross Country Skiing.  The updated Superthem Beanie has become my winter favourite.  I like the way it stays on my head whatever with its new elastic drawcord.   TIP #3: My summer wetsuit is great, I don't need another one but I'm COLD!! Get your base layer right. Lycra rash vests are out I'm afraid, the fabric is designed to keep you cool so these should only be worn to protect you from UV rays. PolyPro™ base layers are in and will make a huge difference to your core temperature. Once again, these items can be used across multiple sports and activities. The brushed, fleece-like lining is very soft and comfortable next to your skin and the polypropylene fabric is naturally hydrophobic which means it repels water rather than absorbing it.    TIP #4: I'm STILL cold :-( Take a look at your first line of defence, what's keeping the wind, rain, snow and spray out? Our Aquafleece® revolutionised the standard spray top - waterproof outer AND a soft fleece lining, the perfect combination! You can wear it all year round too, just adjust the layers you wear underneath in the warmer months to stop you overheating. Our range is available in a number of different colours, styles and constructions - watch this video to find out more.   Check your Neoprene Thickness Next is to look at the thickness of the neoprene you are wearing. Usually, less than 3mm neoprene is used in the summer months or in warmer climates. We would recommend our Men's Supertherm range or our Women's Supertherm range which is 4mm and provides good warmth in colder months. A Supertherm Longjohn and Top Combo is very cosy. Our Pro Hikers are also 4mm and can be paired with our Supertherm Top which is what I wear for most of the winter months - but only when combined with our awesome Poly Pro base layers.    Who said its too cold to go sailing!!

Winter Training Layering Tips

Winter doesn’t mean your sailing or training has to stop – it just means you need to prepare your kit properly. The right layering system will keep you warm, dry, and able to focus on performance instead of the cold. At Rooster, we’ve refined our layering philosophy so every piece works together, giving you flexibility whether you’re racing, coaching, or training ashore. You can check out our full layering guide for tips throughout the year, but for Autumn/Winter specific keep reading below:   The Golden Rule: Layer Like an Onion Layering is about trapping warm air close to your body while managing moisture and protecting against wind and spray. Each layer has a job to do, and when combined, they deliver comfort and performance in even the harshest conditions.      Think of this as your second skin. Its job is to regulate body temperature and wick moisture away, keeping you dry even when you’re working hard. Technical base layers: Soft, quick-drying fabrics prevent chills caused by sweat. Close-fitting design: Ensures no cold gaps and allows easy layering on top.   Rooster Pick: Hot Top & Leggings – the winter sailor’s secret weapon. Top tip: Skip rash vests or Lycra layers as insulation – they won’t add warmth and can actually make you feel cooler. When it comes to layering, sometimes less really is more.   This is where you add warmth. Choose pieces that are flexible, breathable, and easy to peel off when conditions change. Flexible layering: Adjust your neoprene thickness to match the forecast. When the temperature drops below 15°C, reach for your Supertherm® 4mm Top and Longjohn for maximum warmth. In milder conditions, your Thermaflex® 1.5mm layers may be all you need – and if you’re someone who feels the cold, add extra base layers for comfort. When it is really really cold, you could double up on neoprene!   Check out our blog on what the forecast says vs the actual temperatures.   Your shell is the barrier against wind, spray, and rain. Look for waterproofing, breathability, and freedom of movement. Aquafleece Spray tops or SB1 Inshore Smock: Great for dinghy sailing. SB1 Jacket or Pro Rigging Jacket: Added protection when conditions are rougher.   Your hands, feet, and head lose heat fastest, so finishing your system with quality accessories is vital. Neoprene gloves & mitts for grip and warmth. Neoprene socks layered under boots for warm, dry feet. Hats, beanies, neck gaiters & balaclavas to prevent heat loss from your head and neck.   💡 Did you know? Research published in the British Medical Journal found that if your head is the only part of your body uncovered, you can lose around 7–10% of your body heat through it. A simple hat or hood can make a huge difference to your comfort and endurance on the water.   Customer Favourite Pick for Autumn/Winter Training: AquaPro Gloves, Hot Socks, Supertherm Beanie & Aquafleece Neck Gaiters.   One of the toughest parts of winter training is when the day is split into two sessions with downtime in between. That mid-day break can be when the cold really creeps in, leaving you feeling flat, sluggish, and unmotivated for round two. The good news? With a few smart habits, you can stay warm, recover properly, and head back out ready to perform.   Top tips for staying warm between sessions:  Layer up quickly: Throw on a warm, windproof outer layer such as our Pro Aquafleece® Rigging Coat or Aquafleece® Robe to trap heat and stop the chill setting in. Swap your kit: Take a spare pair of socks and gloves to change into during the break – dry, warm hands and feet make a huge difference. Don’t forget your head: A simple beanie helps keep body heat in and makes you feel instantly warmer. Refuel smartly: Pack proper food and a hot drink to top up energy levels and keep your core temperature steady. Keep moving: Light activity between sessions helps circulation and stops you from cooling down too much.     Avoid rash/lycra layers – they hold water and makes you cold. Stay flexible – pack an extra mid-layer, socks and gloves in your kit bag so you can adapt. Check your fit – layers should sit comfortably without restricting movement. Look after your gear – rinse saltwater off regularly and let items dry fully.   Final Thought: Winter sailing and training are all about preparation. Get your layering right, and you’ll be warm, comfortable, and ready to perform – whatever the weather throws at you.   Our full layering guide and more information on layering for different conditions can be found here.

Why It Feels Colder on the Water – What the forecast doesn't always tell you!

Whether you’re heading out for a training session, coaching from a RIB, or a full day of racing, you’ve probably noticed this universal truth: It ALWAYS feels colder on the water, But WHY? And how should you dress to stay warm, dry, and focused out there? At Rooster, we believe that understanding the science behind air temperature on land vs. sea can help you make smarter kit choices - and in turn have a much better time on the water. The Science: Air Temperature on Land vs. Sea The main reason it feels colder at sea than on land is down to three key factors: water’s thermal properties, wind chill, and humidity. 1. Water Holds Cold Better Than Land Water has a much higher specific heat capacity than land, meaning it takes longer to heat up—and cool down. So even on a warm spring or autumn day, the sea may still be holding onto winter temperatures. That colder surface cools the air directly above it. ✅ Example: According to the UK Met Office, in spring, sea surface temperatures around the UK are often 5–8°C colder than the average daytime air temperature on land. ✅ More science? The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) explains that during winter, the ocean tends to warm the air above it more effectively than cold land surfaces, leading to noticeable differences in temperature. 2. Wind Chill is Stronger Over Water Open water spaces offer less shelter, so wind speeds are typically higher. This increases convective heat loss, making it feel much colder than the thermometer says—especially if you're wet or moving fast. 💨 Fact: A 10°C air temperature with a 20-knot breeze can feel like 3–4°C once wind chill is accounted for. (Source: National Weather Service Wind Chill Calculator) 🌧️ And when you add water into the mix—whether from spray, rain, or full immersion—the cooling effect intensifies. This is known as wet wind chill, and it can dramatically drop your perceived temperature. Check out this live Wet Wind Chill Chart from Southampton Weather to see just how cold it can feel. 3. Humidity and Evaporation Cool You Down When you’re surrounded by water, evaporation plays a major role in how cold you feel. Wet kit (or spray from waves and wind) speeds up heat loss from your body through evaporation—especially in technical fabrics. 🌊 Even on sunny days, this combo of wind + water = cold. What This Means for Your Kit Bag The difference in perceived temperature between land and sea can be 5–10°C or more. That’s a big deal if you’re dressing based on the weather you felt in the car park! At Rooster, we always recommend preparing for the real conditions you’ll experience on the water—not just what your phone’s weather app says. Here’s how to layer like a pro: 1. Base Layer Start with moisture-wicking thermal layers. Our PolyPro™ Leggings and PolyPro™ Top regulate body temperature and stay warm even when damp. 2. Insulating Mid-Layer In colder months or early mornings, add an insulating layer like our 4mm Supertherm Neoprene (for temperatures under 12°C) or 1.5mm Thermaflex Neoprene (for when its a bit warmer) for extra warmth without bulk. 3. Waterproof / Windproof Outer Layer Seal it all in with a windproof, waterproof shell. Our Aquafleece® Spray Top range is a great top-layer addition for dinghy sailing, offering insulation without the bulk. For sportsboat and keelboat sailors or coaches needing protection without sacrificing movement, the SB1 Inshore Jacket or Coastal Hi-Fits are ideal. Final Thought: Be One Step Ahead It’s easy to underestimate how cold it’ll feel on the water—especially when the sun is shining. But staying warm means staying sharp, enjoying your session, and avoiding early exits due to the chill. So next time you’re packing kit for a day afloat, remember: it’s not just about air temperature—it’s about where you are. Layer smart, and you’ll be ready for anything. Explore our full layering range and gear up for comfort, confidence, and performance—whatever the forecast says. 📚 Learn more about temperature science from NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center and their detailed explanation of air-water temperature differences.

A Beginners Guide to Wing Foiling - Rooster Steve Learns to Fly

During the long hot summer of 2022, my wife got hooked on the idea of learning to Wing Foil. After she had taken a couple of lessons, I was encouraged to give it a go.   I should say that I am a fairly fit 60 year old who can swim 2K in 35 mins and who spends lots of my spare time doing core workouts and bike rides.  I am fairly accomplished small dinghy sailor and can understand the wind, although the last time I stood on a windsurfer was 40 years ago and I would not say I was a natural, I only managed to keep on the board by using the wind to help balance me. Sarah had purchase a beginner set up a 115 Litre board and a 2000cm foil, 85cm mast and a some wings - 4sqm, 5sqm and 6sqm so while Sarah went out practicing, I made up a dagger board out of a sheet of ply and strapped it to the bottom of a SUP and spent a fun afternoon with her spare wing, trying to make the SUP sail to windward.  My walk of shame upwind gradually got smaller. My roughly constructed daggerboard was not ideal but it helped me make a start. In hindsight, I should have purchased a Foiling World daggerboard, designed specifically for adapting a SUP to learn to Wing. Rob Andrews' design looks much sleeker and more efficient than mine.  My next outing was a short try of the real thing, Sarah's 115L board.  It is meant to be a beginner board for someone of 70Kg, but it felt like I was standing on a office swivel chair.  I spent a lot of time swimming and there was no danger of it begging to foil, however I was still keen to learn.   Sarah was by now regularly foiling so we booked a warm winter break to crack it.  Boa Vista in Cape Verde is not an ideal venue, but it was warm and the trade winds are more consistent during December.   The wind was offshore - and despite Planet Allsports indicating that they would run a shuttle to get up back upwind in early correspondence, when we arrived they played hard ball and said they would not hire us equipment if we could not make good distance to windward and back to the beach.  Was this a ploy to get more cash for running supported lessons?  You might think that - but I could not possibly comment. Needless to say we took some more lessons so we had the freedom of bearing away and trying to foil (mostly falling off - but at least we tried)    After 6 days, 4 hours a day of taxiing on my knees, standing, starting to foil falling off and starting all over again, I was pretty broken, but I was hooked. I was sooo glad that I had taken some Rooster Knee pads to protect my knees and shins from the foil and the board. I even wore the junior knee pads on my arms to stop the bruising as I was forever climbing back on the board. . The conditions were not idea and I did spend long periods on my knees waiting for enough wind to pump myself to my feet. I also see the experts on their sinker boards giving their knees a real workout as they have to pump hard from their knees whilst on their sinking board to get to their their feet. Perhaps they should try Rooster Knee pads.   I compared the gear we used to that used by Wing Foilers and I must say that I was proud to wear the Rooster Thermaflex® 1.5mm Chest-Zip Wetsuit. Conceived to withstand the aggressive wear environment of dinghy sailing makes them super durable for Wing Foiling.  By the end of the holiday Sarah was very competently foiling on both tacks whereas I was foiling fairly successfully on port but not on Starboard.  I think I had too many bad crashes on Starboard - and so I lent back too much - which then becomes an ever increasing crash spiral.  We were also both 1Kg lighter than before Christmas. It was certainly a workout! We quickly found some second hand kit on Facebook marketplace.  We are now the proud owner of a 105L board with a 1900 wing.  I am 70Kg so that is 35Kg of positive buoyancy, although a bigger volume would be more stable.  Your mast height (the mast is the bit between your foil and the board) should be shorter for beginners to reduce the size of the crash - but longer if you are foiling regularly in waves. Also a shorter mast will help those foiling in restricted shallow water.  The one technique that I must work on is the ability to pump the wing and board.  It's key to being able to use a smaller board and foil and foil in lighter winds.  Smaller foils are faster which helps them carry you though the gybes but are also harder to get to fly. A smaller board makes for a more agile ride but is tricky to stand on and taxi before you are foiling. To help me progress, I think I should take a wing to the beach and do some pumping practice.  There are some great pumping videos on You Tube - but the best I have seen is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1N7YVawe9g I also managed to get a 4sqm and a 5sqm wing from Foiling World Ltd, again very reasonably priced and well made.  People tend to hold onto their wings and sell their foils and boards as they upgrade to smaller foils and lower volumes on the board.  As I will be an evening 'wing foiler', I imagine a board with some positive buoyancy will remain my preference so I can taxi home on when the wind dies.   I have managed to make it out in January armed with some hot legs and hot top together with an Aquafleece® Neck Gaiter and a Supertherm Beanie to boost my Rooster Supertherm Steamer. We had much better wind and conditions than Boa Vista - just the water at Hill Head was a little colder - and more importantly I managed to foil consistently on both tacks - whoppie!! The Rooster Race Armour Buoyancy Aid doubles as an impact vest was ideal, although I took a size smaller than what I normally wear dinghy sailing as it felt more secure.   I used a pair of Small Rooster Knee Pads on my knees and a pair of junior knee pads on my arms as I am still climbing on the board a lot! I also wore a Rooster Helmet which despite it not being ISO approved - it was very reassuring and offered plenty of protection when crashing.  We are looking forward to those long sunny evenings on the South Coast when we can spend an hour or two having fun flying.
